Exposure to age-appropriate books is a critical building block for language development, curiosity, and a love of learning.
Unfortunately, in many households those reading materials are in short supply. In low-income neighborhoods, there is one age-appropriate book for every 300 children.
That is why we believe the mission of More Books in Children’s Hands is so critical.
By providing age-appropriate books that kids can take home, explore, and keep, we can ensure the seeds of learning are planted early.
When we visit kindergarten classrooms, daycares, and preschools, each child is gifted a collection of books. In addition, we provide the teacher with books for the classroom.
Providing these books is a small and simple -- yet powerful -- act that can change that child's view of the world and their future.
More Books in Children’s Hands was created to honor the life of Debbie Leivers. A long-time elementary teacher in Colorado Springs, there was little she loved more than children and reading.
It is our honor to spread that love to children throughout the Colorado Springs area in Debbie's memory -- made possible by your support and generous donations.
Our mascot – the elephant “Rufus” – was a principal character in countless made-up stories that Debbie’s father told his children and later, his grandchildren.
